Bluegrass in Newton and Needham this evening

Two good bluegrass events, both of them all ages. Also, an update on the house concerts.
The Boston Bluegrass Union's annual SpringFest is this evening:
    Greetings from the BBU --
Spring is in the air, and that means it's time for the BBU's Springfest Regional Band Showcase on Saturday, May 1st at the Second Church in W. Newton. We kick off the evening with a Picking Party at 5 PM, a Potluck Dinner (for those that bring) at 6 PM and the band showcase at 6:30 PM. Bands performing on Saturday include:
    • The Muellers
    • The Barrel Scrapers
    • Monadnock
    • Late Night Radio
As always, this is a great family event, with a picking party and potluck dinner. We also will be doing a food collection for the Newton Food Pantry. Admission is $6 per person ($1 off for BBU members), children under 12 free.

Directions to Second Church - From Route 95/128, take Route 16 East and follow into West Newton Square. At the bank, take a right onto Highland Street. Church is over the bridge and on the left. Hope to see you there!
    Gerry Katz, BBU
Also this evening, Northern Lights is performing at the Homegrown Coffeehouse in Needham. Northern Lights is a nationally touring bluegrass band from the Boston area with a long history. I wrote about them when I first posted about Jake Armerding here. Jake's father Taylor Armerding, one of the founders of Northern Lights and their lead singer, retired from he band last year, and Ben Demerath (well known to Nields fans) replaced him. With Mike Kropp and Jake Armerding also gone from the band, they're rather different than when I first knew them, but still one of my favorite bluegrass bands in the area. Dave Dick, formerly of Southern Rail and Salamander Crossing, replaced Mike Kropp on the banjo, and Northern Lights veteran Bill Henry is still there.
The Homegrown Coffeehouse is at the First Parish Unitarian Church, 23 Dedham Ave., in Needham. This show is $15, 8:00pm, for more info call 781-444-7478.
House concert update: Rachael Sage and Jenny Bruce tomorrow is cancelled because of too few RSVPs. However, the Molly Zenobia house concert in Waltham next Sunday afternoon is happening! Watch for more details here soon, or write to cos@mollyzenobia.com if you want to come.
