Silhouettes

Dada, Molly Zenobia's first interactive themed show at the Lily Pad last month with the Army of Broken Toys, featured such things as:
- Molly performing one of her songs backwards
- Each of the main acts drawing the other during the other's set
- A collaborative audience poem
- Molly with cellist Valerie Thompson, in the video on the right

Molly's next in the series is this Thursday evening, 7-10pm, with Valerie and Vessela of Goli (the same Valerie who's playing cello in the video - there will be more Molly + cello at this show), Brendan Burns, and Nate Greenslit from Humanwine. And more art.

Molly Zenobia: 2 August shows, then gone for a while

Molly Zenobia has two more shows coming up this month in Somerville and Cambridge, then she's going back to LA for a few months to record stuff. Both of these shows happen to be all ages, and inexpensive!

Cambridge, tonight: Ashley Maher & Balla Tounkara

Two of my favorite musicians that I rarely see, tonight at the Lily Pad:
  • Ashley Maher, afropop/world/jazz singer-songwriter from Los Angeles

  • Balla Tounkara, one of the world's best kora players, originally from Mali but mostly in Boston for the past decade
This is the sort of show I'd go see at Sanders Theatre or similarly sized venues, and it's kind of amazing that it's gonna happen at such a small venue. Ashley's not that well known here in Boston, and Balla plays all over (last time I saw him was randomly in Harvard Square). If you like African music and world music this show will make you very happy!

Lily Pad, 1353 Cambridge Street, Inman Square
Sunday, October 14th, Ashley @7pm & Balla @8:30pm
$10 suggested donation, all ages

Amanda Palmer this afternoon

Amanda Palmer is doing a solo show at the Lily Pad in Inman Square, Cambridge, at 5pm today. It's unpublicized because it's a small place - the former home of the Zeitgeist if you remember it - and she didn't want more people to show up than could fit. Which might still happen, so arrive early (4:30, she suggests). 1353 Cambridge Street, a few doors down from the 1369 Coffeehouse on the corner of Cambridge & Hampshire.

Wed, Sep 22: Kit at Ryles

The Matthew Stubbs Band has a show in the city! Right near where I used to live, in fact. It's this Wednesday night at Ryles in Inman Square. This is the band I wrote about last year when they were in the Boston Blues Challenge - and won - featuring Kit Holliday as lead singer. She writes,
On Wednesday, September 22, the Matthew Stubbs Band returns to Ryle's Jazz Club in Cambridge, with an extra special horn section including Scott Shetler, John Moriconi, and Doug James. Should be a burnin' show... hope to see you all there on a school night!

Wed, March 25: Zeitgeist gallery zoning hearing

Where have all the independent performances spaces gone?

Boston area people...
The Zeitgeist Gallery is having a hearing before the Cambridge Zoning Board this evening, to see if they will be able to continue performances in their space. 8:45pm at the Senior Center, 806 Mass Ave., Cambridge (next to the YMCA in Central Square).
The Zeitgeist is having a hearing before the Cambridge Zoning Board of Appeals to apply for a 'Special Permit' to do whatever the hell it is we do, 8:45 pm on Thurs. 25 March. While being declared as a 'Hall and Theatre' may not be our idea of a good time, there may not be any more good times if we aren't. To that end we'd like to make sure that they know that a whole lot of folks think we are the Berries and should be allowed to keep on with a minimum of regulatory inhibition. We also think it would be a good idea to show up with a fat batch of high-test testimonials attesting to our Social Signifigance, maybe even Cultural Value to the Community! Hah! [...]
We'd really like to Represent with our Posse in the House: if you'd like to come support the Z and see how Democracy is did, we'd be most happy to have you there (please! we need a crowd, if only for psychological support) March 25, 8:45pm at the Senior Center, 806 Mass Ave, Central Sq. Word.
    Very Much Obliged,
    yr friends,
    The Zeitgeist Krewe
The Zeitgeist is one of the few public art/performance venues left around the Boston area. It's where Molly Zenobia performed at Whimsy last summer. The Boston Phoenix article I linked above has more about what's going on. If you're free this evening and want the Zeitgeist to continue to be able to have performances, you can help by coming to the hearing, so the zoning board sees there's a lot of community support.

Tue, Jun 17: Molly Zenobia at Whimsy (Cambridge, MA)

Molly's got another solo gig at a performance art night here in Boston! This time it's Whimsy, which stopped running a while ago and was recently resurrected by [info]exoterica and her friend Markus Nechay. Same name, sort of a new series. I don't know who else is performing this Tueday, but I may know more later, and if I do I'll update this post.

Whimsy will be 9pm-midnight at The Zeitgeist Gallery in Inman Square, 1353 Cambridge Street.
I think it's all ages and a $5 suggested donation.
